Nekoneko's Movie Litterbox!!

Well, Gentle Readers, it’s been a busy, busy month, but tonight’s the payoff…. Halloween is finally here at last!! Yep…. time for yours truly to let her hair down and enjoy an evening of fun and frolics…. and play dress up too! (Hehehe, this is really the only holiday where a middle aged woman can still get away with dressing in a silly costume and not be though of as utterly insane….)

If fact…. as I sit here and type this entry, I’ve the unique experience of doing it while totally a lovely shade of green from head to toe…. Yes, for one evening only, your Favorite Catgirl Princess is gonna be “Magical Orion Slave Girl Princess Neko”…. and I’m wiggling my lil’ green toes in fuzzy bathroom slippers huddled in my bathrobe while I wait for Carolyn to get back from the store and some last minute shopping… then it’s off for a naughty evening of “Trick or Treating” and a costume party at a local Pub where we Carolyn and I will strut our stuff and see what kinda mischief two women can get up to while in disguise…. Hehehe!!

Anyway… I’ve had fun trying to meet my “Halloween Review-athon” goal…. and even though I fell a bit short, it’s been nice to rouse myself into a more active effort here at the ol’ Litterbox than I been able to maintain in quite some time. (Now I just have to keep that momentum going….. Crossin’ my lil’ paws for luck!!)

I’ll be back soon with all the details of our evening and here’s hoping all of you have an absolutely “Nekolishous” time of your very own this spooky evenin’ with the ones you love as well!! Big kitty huggles for you all!

Another day closer to Halloween, and we’ve got another creepy Indonesian ghost story for you, “The Real Pocong”. Yep… our favorite “ghost in a sack” is back…. and this time it’s gonna steal away a cute lil’ girl forever!! OMG!!

Our synopsis reads: “Ivan (Ashraf Siclair) and Rini (Nubila Syakieb) have a beautiful child, Laura. After so much time without a house of thier own, finally Ivan has bought a small bungalow out in the forest. But from the first time they step foot in the house, Laura is afraid and feels there is something wrong with the place. Rini presumes than Laura just doesn’t like the lonely house and doesn’t want to live there. Ivan feels Laura just needs some time to adapt to living there. Then a mysterious cat is been found by Laura. With the arrival of this cat, Laura feels more comfortable and forgets her initial fears. One day while sleeping, Laura always hears a song never sang by her mother, Rini. Laura sings this song to Rini for next morning. Rini starts to believe there is something strange happening with Laura. Rini becomes very afraid and becomes upset with Ivan who has hidden the house’s tragic past. He doesn’t believe in bad luck or ghosts, and dismisses her fears as foolish. Laura gets lost on afternoon under wierd circumstances. Rini believes the loss of Laura was caused by supernatural; forces, but Ivan beleives Laura has been kidnapped. Ivan goes to report to police. After Ivan goes, Rini calls in a Paranormal to help find Laura. However the Paranormal is too weak to battle against the evil spirit that haunts the house…. What can be done to save Laura from, “The Real Pocong”?”

Yep…. creepy ghosts just seem to haunt Indonesia everywhere. And…. from this lil’ Catgirl’s perspective, that’s a good, good, thing!! It means oodles and oodles of ghost stories for lil’ ol’ me to enjoy, and plenty of opportunities to tell you all about them… so by all means, Gentle Visitors, it’s time to “Read On” !

Halloween is close at hand, o’ Gentle Visitors, but here at the Litterbox there’s still just enough time for one more Philippine ghost story before the month finally runs out, so here’s their latest to hit DVD, “Villa Estrella”. Straight to this lil’ Catgirl from my last Philippine mail order….. Ah, the joys of Internet shopping!!

The synopsis available reads like follows: “Ana (Shaina Magdayao) always has bad dreams about people getting murdered when she sleeps. Her ex-boyfriend (Jake Cuenca) drags Ana to the dilapidated resort of Villa Estrella in an effort to rekindle their lost romance. There, she is introduced to the strange inhabitants of the resort: Giselle, the daughter of one of the resort’s long-time helpers who seem to have a mysterious connection with Ana and the resort’s eccentric caretaker, Mang Gusting, who has been searching for his beloved daughter Andrea since she suddenly disappeared many years ago never to be seen again.

Giselle turns out to be one of the people who appear in her terrifying dreams. Strange incidents start to occur when Jennifer (Celine Lim), Giselle’s sister gets pulled into a swimming pool. Ana then realized she is spiritually connected to the resort where the ghosts are seeking vengeance from people who caused their death. They need to leave the resort before they become their next victims…”

Romance…. ghosts…. bad dreams…. run down resorts haunted by the evil spirits of the vengeful dead… even a sweet little crippled girl thrown in to pump up the cuteness level…. this one certainly looks to have covered all the bases for sure. But then, the real test is always in the watching, so there’s really only one way to know what’s up, and that’s if…. you guessed it… you all “Read On”….

Halloween fast approaches us and so it’s time for another holiday themed “Lil Kitten Classic” review… this time out it’s the spooky 1942 classic “Cat People”.

Now I know you are all wondering… “Miyuki? You really mean you haven’t ever done a review for this one? How is that even possible?” It does sound somewhat silly for your Favorite horror movie lovin’ Catgirl Princess to have somehow missed this particular classic film here at the ol’ Litterbox, but we can fix that up right now, now can’t we!

Our synopsis goes like this: “Architect Oliver Reed falls in love with beautiful Irena Dubrovna and they duly marry. But Irena refuses to give herself to Oliver, believing that there is something evil inside herself. She tells him of her Serbian ancestors who were reputed to be able to transform into cats when angered.

As Oliver’s frustration and unhappiness grows, he seeks consolation in the arms of co-worker Alice Moore. But a series of near-attacks on the two of them leave him wondering if Irena has not become jealously deranged or if maybe her Serbian legends are true and that she is turning into a cat person to avenge herself on them.”

Oooooh! Mysterious girls from the Balkans that can turn themselves into man eating panthers!! I don’t remember exactly when lil’ Miyuki first encountered this one, but I do remember it was a truly creepy, truly different sort of horror movie and that I liked it a lot even way back then.

Does it still hold up today? I guess we’ll have to give it another watch and find out. Let’s go!

Happy Halloween!! – Week 4!!

October 26th, 2009

Well… the days get shorter, and the month creeps slowly to an end as we move into the final week of our Halloween festivities here at the ol’ Litterbox, so it’s time to see where we stand….. Seems all your Favorite Catgirl has managed to get done are 12 reviews so far, which makes this a banner month here, but falls well short of our lofty goal of 31. D’ohhhh!!

I’m gonna be a busy, busy, busy lady this week, but not to fear, I’ll try like heck to squeeze a couple more goodies in for you all, Gentle Readers, so fear not. After all, what’s Halloween without a few sweet treats to savor and enjoy?

Speaking of treats…. I have just about finished playing “wardrobe mistress” and pulled together costumes for Carolyn and me for the party this Saturday night. We’re definitely going with a “Star Trek” theme….. but not just any “Star Trek” costumes will do…. Oh, no, no, no!! No boring costumes for us! I’ve had a wicked lil’ inspiration and come up with a sexy combo sure to win us that Best Costume prize. It surprises me just how much fun I’ve had working on this….. I guess the ol’ cosplay spirit hasn’t left me after all, despite the years I’ve been away from it.

So what did I come up with? Well….. if ya wanna know that I’m sure you’ll want to “Read On” and find out!!

So…. What’s an October without Zombies? Lots and lots of Zombies? That question always keeps this lil’ Catgirl awake at night, and if you are regular readers here at the ol’ Litterbox then I just know such ponderings must occupy most of your waking moments too. Well worry no more, for our next Halloween themed review takes us back to the Land of the Rising Sun for more crazy Zombie bashing action, in “Zombie Self Defense Force”, just out on Region 1 English subbed DVD this last week.

Synopsis….? Naturally, and it goes something like this: “They thought it was an ordinary day in the Japanese countryside – a day of sightseeing for tourists, photo shoots for a pop-star model and her crew, routing training for a squad of JSDF soldiers, treachery for an adulterous couple and sudden murder for gangsters. Everything changes, though, when a UFO crashes and releases some form of strange radiation. Confusion turns to sheer terror and the grim, blood-soaked will to survive when the dead rise and attack the living in a mindless cannibalistic frenzy! Soon, the soldiers and a handful of civilians are holed up in a secluded hotel, surrounded by the zombie hordes. There are other dark secrets at work, though. One of the soldiers, Yuri, is having sudden, painful flashbacks to a mysterious operating room, and there’s that spooky legend about the ghostly, ultra-patriotic Japanese soldier from WWII lurking in a local cave…”

So it’s the Japanese army versus the Living Dead eh? Well dang it, I just know you are gonna wanna find out if they can outfight Japanese schoolgirls on this subject so lets all “Read On”, shall we?

More Halloween goodness from the Philippines…. and this time out our “Halloween Review-athon” brings you Gentle Visitors a look at “Dalaw”…. The only ghost story I’ve ever seen about the horrors of menstruation!! No, no, no… not just the horrible cramps and nasty bloating….. but some full on ghostly haunting for good measure. Hehehe!!

Our quickie synopsis for it goes sorta like this: “Laarni (played by Katrina Halili), a journalist is assigned to write a news report about a ghost called Estrela (Kristel Fulgar) in Cavite. Estrela was said to possess teenage girls having their menstruation for the first time. By deeper research Laarni found out about Estrela’s painful past and her abusive parents.

Her mother Cleo (played by Glydel Mercado) had an affair with one guy called Amado (played by Mon Confiado). Later her father Erning (played by Tonton Gutierrez) finds out and quarrels with her. He accidentally killed Cleo in front of Estrela’s presence. Erning then starts to abuse the innocent Estrela. The question now is why does Estrela turns into a ghost after her death and takes revenge with teenage girls instead of boys?”

Ooooohhhh!! The trailer for this one certainly looked good, and as I was able to score a nice copy from a decent domestic DVD source I just had to snag my own copy. This little Catgirl can never…. and I mean never… pass up the chance for some decent subtitled Asian ghost goodness! The Filipinos haven’t disappointed me lately, so I just went for it!

Wanna see how a ghost story about  women’s periods plays out? Then you’ll just have to “Read On”, silly!!

Happy Halloween!! – Week 3!!

October 21st, 2009

The creepy month of October is slipping by soooo quickly!! As is painfully evident, your Favorite Catgirl has fallen waaaay behind her goal of reaching an astounding 31 reviews for the month….. life it seems wants it to be that way I guess. Sigh….

On the plus side…. I’ve been a nosy lil’ Kitten, poking through old boxes and trying to work up some costume ideas for Carolyn and myself. I really want to wow people at the masquerade party Halloween evening. There’s a prize for the best theme costume for couples so I’m hoping we can make a good showing. Luckily for me, I’ve tons of old cosplay things still left over from my college days, and even luckier, I’m still the exact same size I was waaaay back then so they all still fit…. Yay me!! Now I just need to find some stuff for my sweetie, Carolyn…… Thank goodness for the Internet and 2 day guaranteed shipping…. Hehehe!!

I’m torn at the moment between a “Brides of Dracula” idea and a “Classic Star Trek” thingee. Each of  these would let both of us dress up in some truly cute and sexy outfits, never a bad thing from the viewpoint of winning a contest. Hmmmmm? Decisions… decisions.

Review wise…. I’m going to get a couple more done today if I can, and we’ll see if I can at least make a reasonable showing for the month. Expect the Philippine ghost story “Dalaw” late this afternoon for certain….

Till then…. “Meow, meow for now!!”

Well…. as I sorta expected, I’ve slipped waaay behind my schedule of reviews for this month, but I’m still in there tryin’ my best! This time out, it’s another look at the sort of film that made lil’ ol’ me such a happy, goofy, wee lil’ girl back in the day, with this “Lil’ Kitten Classics” look at the classic 1958 Scifi horror combo “The Blob”.

Our synopsis reads like this: “Teenagers Steve Andrews (played by Steve McQueen) and his girlfriend Jane Martin (played by Aneta Corsaut) are making out and watching the stars when they see a large meteor fall to Earth nearby so they go in search of it. Before they find it an old man discovers the meteor and the weird jelly creature contained within. It attaches itself to his arm, and by the time the two kids find him the creature is already dissolving him away. They take him to a local doctor for help, but when the monster grows out of control and absorbs both the old man as well as the doctor and his loyal nurse, the kids find themselves unable to convince the local authorities that their peaceful little town is now in deadly peril from…. the Blob!!”

Gooey space monsters that look like cherry jello? As well as the great Steve McQueen in his first starring role? Yep… you just know that this lil’ Catgirl totally ate this one up as a kid. So what’s the big deal about this one? Let’s all “Read On” and see what gives it such memorable class.

Our latest Halloween Review finds your Favorite Catgirl in Taiwan, for a look at what is being described as Taiwan’s first homemade slasher flick, “Invitation Only”… their contribution to the recent “torture porn” end of the genre.

Our quick synopsis goes like this: “Ordinary young men and women often dream of the unreachable life of the worlds idle rich. Wade, Richard, Hitomi, Holly and Lin certainly do. They have all received an invitation to an exclusive party held by a group of rich & famous people, obviously addressed to them by mistake. But all the same, they attend. It is the best party ever, a wishing game takes place where their deepest desires materialize. But when they find Richards body brutally killed, the wishing game turns into a killing game in which they are the tortured victims and a rich audience the sadistic spectators. To escape from the party and survive is now their only dream.”

Hmmmm? Sounds grisly…. and you know how that sorta goes down for this lil’ Catgirl…. but it is subtitled, and I can never pass up a chance to snag Asian horror with subtitles. So… hopefully it’ll be more of an over the top spoof than a realistic gore fest…. but somehow I doubt it. I just know I’m gonna have nightmares….
