“Mizuchi” aka “Death Water” (2006) – Japanese Horror

Posted Monday, October 29th, 2007

It’s almost the end of the month, and I know I’ve fallen short of my goal, but here’s another review for you all, this time the Japanese horror film “Mizuchi” aka “Death Water”….straight from my new all-region Singapore edition of the film…..

The synopsis for it reads: “Something is amiss in the Kanto region. As earthquakes rock the area, journalist Togakure Kyoko (Igawa Haruka) investigates a series of mysterious suicides. In all the cases, the victims showed symptoms of delusion and unnatural thirst and bore out their own eyes before killing themselves. One of the dead, professor Morikawa (Yanagi Yurei), left a message warning of “death water”, which he had been studying prior to his death. Kyoko thinks that a problem with the water supply is somehow causing these deaths, a suggestion that her ex-husband Yuichi (Watabe Atsuro) dismisses until he too starts showing symptoms. Earthquakes, death water, a recently discovered archaeological ruin – everything seems to be connected somehow, but exactly what is behind this epidemic of suicides? The cause may be even more shocking than the consequences…..”

Sounds good eh?…. I thought so too, as the whole eye gouging thingee touches upon a decidedly personal phobia of mine. Hehehehe. But if you want to know more, you’re gonna have to “Read On”……

You see, my mom once spent a good three months having to squirt gooey medication under my eyelids to treat a rather nasty chemical burn I suffered as a child….. I still get goosebumps when I remember it and it’s the main reason I wear glasses today rather than contacts. Naturally this one was one hard movie to watch, but I needn’t have worried….. “Mizuchi” is more about suggestion than actual gore. No real eyeballs were truly threatened during it’s production…….

That’s a shame really….cause this one sorta needed a little help with the scares. It’s more a story about our heroine Kyoko and the reasons behind her recent divorce than any other story. But we’ll leave that for those who might want to watch….

This one seems… well…. slow. I think maybe I’m all worn out on ancient curses…. maybe this lil’ Catgirl needs a downright twisted bit of video nastyness to shake me out of my rut. In any event, this was at least watchable, but it broke no new ground at all. If you like Japanese horror, you, like me, will probably find “Mizuchi” a bit tame for your tastes, but it at least does the workmanlike job of entertaining one for about an hour and a half… so I give it a rather ho-hum 3 “Meows” out of 5, with a biiiiiiig kitty stretch to work out the boredom of it all…… sigh. Maybe next time…… Neko-chan wants some scary stuff!!!!

There was a Trailer from Youtube, but it got removed…… as soon as I find a replacement I’ll post it here for ya!!
